Being a manager

In my current role I line manage one person. I have also recently been project managing an external colleague on a part of the project I am leading. I am exceptionally good at pastoral care and enjoy this aspect of the role. Where I would like coaching is around managing their workload and especially if I would need to be assertive around deadlines or if something wasn’t quite right that they have done or if something is late. It makes me feel so uncomfortable and I find myself wanting to do anything I can to protect them from feeling bad, guilty and upset. I know that ultimately this isn’t a very kind thing to do because it doesn’t set them up for future work settings and it doesn’t allow them to fail and then work out solutions. I really want to be able to manage deadlines effectively and so would love coaching on this.
