Q. What advice would this future version of you have to offer the current version of you about how to navigate this current situation?
A. To take it one step at a time. You’ve seen these jeans and T-shirts you like – don’t look around at alternatives, it’s only going to lead to overwhelm of which to buy.
Try and see this as less of losing/spending money but more as stepping into the thought “I want to feel good about myself and have fun with my clothes and that’s ok”
It is just another step in the ladder. You’ve done it before, you can do it again. And the more you do it the easier it’ll get, but first you need to take the action and collect the data – the data that says you don’t need to control or deny yourself.
Buying something new doesn’t have to be permanent or right/wrong unless you let it (this is hard to believe right now, I think it might come with time)
Q. Are there any alternative methods that future you would like to offer current you for how to make this purchase?
A.
To break it down step by step:
1. You’ve seen something you like, Great!
T: I like that and would like to try it on
F: Excited
2. Ask yourself if you can afford it or can spend a little extra on it at this time
3. Order it/buy in-store
4. Try it on and see how you feel in it/like it
5. Keep or return if don’t like then look for something else
Don’t leave it until the last minute – that creates panic and extra costs for quicker delivery. That way, if you’re unsure, you have time to think about it as well.
Don’t look around for cheaper alternatives or limit that. You’re never going to be able to look at all similar items and compare price etc. Plus it’ll lead to confusion and overwhelm and the T line “I don’t know which one to buy, there’s too much choice” leading to the A line of not buying anything.
Q. What does future you want current you to remember at this time?
A. That you’re not buying a whole new wardrobe, it’s just a couple of items. Buying new items now, seeing how it goes then buying some more will not beak the bank. Spreading the cost will mean you can manage any unexpected outgoings.
You’re allowed to see things you like, want them, get them (or save up then get them) and feel good in them. You’re allowed to feel good in yourself. It makes such a difference to how you feel and how you treat yourself when you’re wearing clothes you like to wear and feel good in and have put effort in to yourself. You earn your money and you’re allowed to enjoy it, only you can give yourself permission to do that. By taking action you’ll learn to trust yourself to purchase things, plus so much more. And these are the things you want to learn – you can’t learn without trying and doing.
