Hi
I’ve been making great progress this year in following my dream of becoming a glass artist. But I am stumbling at the part where I start to make it into a business, in part because I can’t settle on a name, which is then having a knock on effect that I haven’t yet set up social media pages etc.
I initially decided to keep it really simple – “Glass by xxx (my name”) which is very similar to my Pilates business which is just Pilates with xxx. I had good reasons, in that I think people tend to remember names easier and for referrals/ recommendations – especially in the Pilates world clients know me by my name and so for word of mouth it makes it easier that they can just tell someone my name. I’m not sure if its the same in the art world.
I don’t know why I’m getting stuck on moving forwards with this, I keep thinking perhaps I need a better name for the business, something more exciting. I’m not sure I even know!
I can see that just getting on with it would be better, I can start sharing my work with the world once I have a name.
Coaching very much welcomed, thank you.
Answer:
Great start! Now, without editing or judging, write down all the reasons you haven’t chosen a name yet. Write down all the questions your brain is asking you. Notice what it’s telling you about what will happen if you pick the “wrong name.” What feeling is driving your decision right now?
What emotion comes up when you tell the story that the name is the only thing stopping you from sharing your work with the world? In what way does it make perfect sense that you haven’t picked one yet? Check in with your nervous system. Putting ourselves into the world can feel scary!
Give yourself a lot of compassion. Do as much or as little thought work as you need. Then, whenever you are ready, pick a deadline to pick a name and just do it. Post in the community when you’ve got it so we can cheer for you!
