Changing narrative around industry I’m in

Hi,
I’m a freelance journalist and just heard about the big redundancies happening at a newspaper I used to work for. The narrative from people I’ve spoken to is around the industry being in crisis… it being a difficult time etc.
Which is most probably the case! And being a freelancer is challenging – as I’ve made clear in multiple ask a coaches…. – however, I also don’t think this is helpful for me either, to be focussing on how hard it is / also the potential additional competition in freelancing with more redundancies.
Is there a way for me to reconcile my own experience of it being ‘challenging’ and the very real changes in the industry AND to feel positive and hopeful about it all? Because I think that this mindset will increase my chances of success.
I would like to feel abundant with opportunities… instead of this scarcity and impending doom narrative…. Then if I decide the industry isn’t for me, I can choose to make other moves. But I don’t want to be doing that out of fear, without trying my own hand at it.
Any tips much appreciated!

Answer:

Interesting how your brain thinks that everyone who is made redundant at a newspaper will become freelancers. And freelancers that would be writing things directly in competition with you. Why do you think it jumped straight there?
In any given profession there are many others doing the same thing. In any given profession there will be lots of voices and opinions. What do you think Maisie would do if someone told her “well, there are already a lot of books out there….” or “are you sure you really want to write a book about periods? It’s kind of uncomfortable…”
How much energy do you want to spend thinking about what ifs?
