During the Nourishment call with Mars, in response to the question ‘where in your life are you not feeling nourished and why?’ I instantly thought of work and had the following thoughts 1) – ‘I have no meaningful purpose at work’ and 2) – ‘I have no meaningful connections at work’. This leads to follow-on thoughts like ‘I hate my job’.
I just wanted to bring my thought work and models around this…
Coming back to these thoughts after a couple of days I questioned whether they were true and the answer was no, for the following reasons:
1) There is meaningful purpose to my role, just not one that I’m entirely passionate about. So I asked myself ‘where is there meaning? Where does it serve a purpose for me and others?’ and I identified a few areas to prove that.
2) There is a little meaningful connection with team members, but there could be more. With remote working and in a small team, it’s not what I’ve previously been able to enjoy.
When asking myself, how do I want to feel? I came to satisfied and motivated but it seemed unbelievable.
I don’t want to change my circumstance, because I won’t be in this role forever, so I came up with the following models…
C: In my current role
T: There’s no meaningful purpose to my job
F: Unmotivated
A: Continue to find ways to validate that my job has no purpose
A: Avoid working, social media, housework etc.
A: Not able to focus on any positives about the role or any progress I’ve made
R: I don’t see purpose in my job
C: In my current role
T: The skills and knowledge I gain in this role will help me in the future
F: Motivated
A: Pay attention to the skills and knowledge I’m learning
A: Focus on where I can improve and learn more
A: Maintain enthusiasm to work
R: I gain skills and knowledge from my role
I started to feel lighter as I was writing the intentional model for this. Wanted to bring where I’ve got to so far for any feedback or next steps. There’s still work to do on the connection thought so I may return with that in another question…
Thank you.
Answer:
I love that you took time to digest and come back to your responses. It seems like this is a really solid set of models, well done! My first question for you is why does feeling satisfied or motivated seem unbelievable?
Secondly, it might be interesting to explore some reasons behind your initial answers to Mars’ question. If you’re tracking your cycle, can you find any data to suggest that you think “I have no meaningful purpose at work” during certain times of your cycle? When this comes round again, it might be interesting to note it in your chart. Come back to us when you’re ready for more coaching in a submission titled, “Dissatisfied with work pt. 2”.
