Hi coaches!
I notice a recurring thought/feeling/action cycle that crops up whenever I come across mainstream diet information that contradicts the way that I eat. I am very purposeful with my diet, and I really aim to eat in a way that I think serves my short term and long term health. When conventional health advice contradicts my dietary habits, I notice myself getting worked up. Here’s the model that I worked on:
C: article contradicts my idea of a healthy diet
T: I am being duped [by the alternative medicine/nutrition people]
F: Fear
A: worry, look for information to confirm my dietary choices, ruminate, maintain my diet but less confidently
R: I create a scenario for myself where “being duped” is possible; I harm myself with my self doubt (??)
I’d love some feedback on this model and especially my R! Thank you 🙂
Answer:
Absolutely that thought creates self doubt. Your result is you don’t trust yourself. It’s not about what you’re eating, it’s you not beliving you can make the right choices in your diet. This probably shows up in other areas as well. If you were 100% confident in yourself, you wouldn’t give these articles a second thought. And one step further, you wouldn’t even read them. It’s little bit like if you are 100% in love you don’t look around at other people but if you’re doubting you’ve found “the one” you will be questioning everything and wondering if there’s someone else better.
If you want to be monogamous with the way of eating you’ve chosen, all you need to do is keep building your self confidence. What would it look like if you just stopped spending so much energy worrying about what other people say about what to eat and just focused on what you think?
The truth is there are millions of ways to eat. You just get to pick one for now and feel good about it. Commit and don’t look back. See what comes up as you explore this and bring back any models or questions.
