Hello there awesome AAC coaches!
I am coming to you following having been coached by Maisie yesterday. I have realised that one of my goal’s three rocks and consistent coaching and self-coaching around receiving criticism, comments, feedback and corrections in the process of writing and submitting my Ph.D thesis. I made the intention to self-coach to come back to my intentional model before opening comments and corrections from my supervisor and others. I am editing today and actually forgot to do this. Just now I hit a comment which made me step into this model:
C: my supervisor wrote the words ‘at PhD level you need to do xyz’
T: I am not at PhD level
F: Inadequate / Not good enough
A: Activated Nervous System
Heart started to range, shallow break, tight chest
Start imagining that I won’t pass my examination because I am not at PhD level
Question everything I have written so far
Feel a bit frozen as well and lack motivation to answer the comment
R: I respond to the comment fully, shy from taking this learning opportunity and remain at my current level.
Sigh, not a nice place to be in. BUT
I would love your input in developing an intentional model I can come back to when I receive feedback comments which take my brain to models like the one above. I will give it a try:
IM
C: my supervisor wrote the words ‘at PhD level you need to do xyz’
T: this is the bit where I get take my learning to the next level – with love –
F: motivated
A: Ask myself if I need a comfort break from writing before stepping into a more challenging editing/writing task
I make a few notes about what I understood from the comment
Start researching / writing
Make a word comment about the new section to discuss later
R: I take my learning -and my thesis – to the next level
What do you think?
Answer:
This is quite a bit of insight, and quite a wonderful model you’ve created. The only addition I’d add to the R line is ‘with love’.
Creating this model is a great start…now, how can you remind yourself that this model is available to you whenever you need it?
Nice work.
