Holiday irritability

Hello
I’m currently on a much anticipated holiday with my husband and 3 children under 7. It’s a great set up, activities for everyone on tap, sunshine, first time away since 2019. Cd19 so not even in deep Autumn.
Having been so excited, I’m now just feeling like my worst self..just a bit disregulated, grumpy with the children and struggling to have fun with them. Middle boy is not loving it but I can’t seem to help him find the fun. My husband rightly telling me not to be so hard on them. I keep trying to give myself pep talks as I need to get a grip and enjoy this time together.
I’m not sure if it’s because I had certain expectations of how it was going to be, or how my kids were going to react. I can’t help but feel I’m affecting them with my mood, understandably.
It seems to be a common thing that I struggle to normalise on holidays, not reacting to change well. I’d hoped I’d changed!! So it’s frustrating to be back here again.
Thank you

Answer:

You mentioned it being CD 19 “so not even deep in Autumn” and that you’d “hoped you’d changed” so it seems like you’re making it mean a lot that you are having this experience.
It also sounds like there is a lot of resistance coming up for you – resistance of reality vs. expectation mostly. What would you say if I told you that struggling to normalise when you’re not in your normal is actually information, not a story, about you?
Would you approach yourself, your holiday, and your family differently? How?
Now that it’s data point, what can you do with your new found knowledge? Could you create a space that would allow you to process the feelings that you’re trying to ‘get a grip on’ so you can actually show up without them? How can you do that?
I’m going to offer that nothing has gone wrong here, and that you are in just the right spot to start doing something differently. Come back for more coaching on what comes out of answering these questions!
