Money- Getting paid

I am in a position at work where I feel that my salary doesn’t match up to the value that I create for the company. I have grown my role over 5 years and during that time have had a few pay rises but I now feel frustrated and resentful that my position has undoubtedly grown from a junior to midweight role however I don’t think that my pay reflects this . It doesn’t help that I don’t know how much other people are paid so in my head everyone else is paid more than me. I am afraid to talk about my pay with my colleagues because I am scared of confirmation that I am underpaid. I am aware that companies will pay employees as little as possible, that is what companies like the one I work for, do. This all adds up to making me determined to work for myself because I imagine doing everything that I do for the company, for myself instead, and I know I could make my own living. This is my 10 year goal… but for the time being I am still employed and want to feel like I am paid properly for the role I play. I want to approach this with my boss but I need some coaching to get me out of feeling graspy (which is not how I want to come across)
This is one of the models I am in:
C: Work for £X a year
T: This company gets a lot out of me for £X an hour
F: Resentful
A: Dwell on my salary and make it mean that I am undervalued
A: Imagine how much other people are paid
R: Nothing changes

Answer:

The reason you feel frustrated and resentful is because you think you your salary doesn’t match the value you create. You’ve now come up with a pile of evidence of how this is true and how your feelings are justified. Your brain is even offering made up reasons like what other people may or may not be getting paid and how companies treat their employees. Awareness that all of this is a story and taking a step back from it will help you feel less resentful and frustrated in the present.
Here’s some gret news! It’s possible to believe you should have a higher salary and not feel frustrated or resentful. If you looked at this objectively and let go of the drama, what is the result you want to create? Try filling in this model and see what comes up.
C: salary
T: What do you need to think about YOU to create this feeling.
F: What feeling do you need to tackle these actions?
A: What do you need to do to make the new salray a reality? Write out everything you can think of that needs to happen.
R: start here-what is the actual amount of money you want to be paid and a date to make it happen.
There will be some fear around completing the actions, your brain hates rocking the boat. It prefers the known uncomfortable to the unknown. If you’ve decided you’re ready to face the unknowns and welcome the uncomfortable that brings change and growth, then pick an emotion that will get you there.
