Hello,
I am from Ireland. I left in 2008 and have moved around a bit. I now live in California and have been here for 7 years. I have a 3 and a 6 year old and they were both born here. My wife is from London. We both have a constant itch about moving back “home”. We would go to Ireland as her family are no longer in the UK. What I need some coaching on is how to make the decision to go or not. If I did not have kids I would definitely go and give it a try but having 2 small kids for me makes it way harder to be nonchalant about it and it feel like it would be a big move to move the whole family. The 2 things I am struggling the most with are :
1. The things that are great here are not comparable to Ireland. So I am not comparing apples to apples. For example the job opportunities are great here but what draws me home is my family, mainly my 3 sisters. Also I have been gone a long time so I feel like a tourist in my own country so I feel like I will struggle a lot to settle back into Ireland.
2. I am currently living here but not fully here because my mind is in Ireland a lot and I feel homesick a lot, so I feel like i live here with one foot out the door. I am always trying to make friends but I feel weird about talking about leaving with people I am trying to be connected with.
Basically I feel very muddled and would love some guidance on how to start picking it apart and make the decision.
Many thanks
Answer:
The actual act of making a decision is actually very simple, even though our human brains come up with all of the reasons it’s not. The reason it feels hard and muddled right now is because you haven’t made your choices yet – is it okay or not for your two children to move at this age? Is being close to your family (sisters) a good reason to move?…and so on.
If there were no way that you could make the wrong decision about whether you move to Ireland or stay in California, what would you decide to do? What is standing between you and making that decision? Why?
