Only do my job

Maisie shared with us near the end of her Master Coaching course that a goal she chose was to be the CEO and only do the work of that job. It was challenging because of building TFC herself from scratch and managing everything herself.
I have been inspired by that since I heard it. In my job at secondary school, I was head of languages and managed the Spanish and Chinese departments and staff (grown from line managing 4 to now 10). I now have two people working as a Head of Spanish and a Head of Chinese, so my role needs to be refined and I would like to disengage from the responsibility of some tasks, I still feel like I am doing too much of the Spanish dept role.
I am writing to you because I am finding it hard to make a start on this being my goal and of course involves the other two people too.
I like my reasons for this goal – 1, I am doing too much, -2, this helps develop the other teachers professionally, -3, clarity is beneficial for all 3 of us. -4, I am older and wiser in my career and time of life (51 yrs old, 24 years a teacher) and need to have the time and freedom to manage projects for future impact instead of curriculum admin tasks.
Unintentional
Circumstance: Share faculty goal to take responsibility for our own jobs
Thought : Not sure where to start
Feeling: stuck / alone but also my nervous system gets activated thinking about it
Action: I think about it but nothing gets done
Result: I am still doing tasks to meet deadlines that I think should be my colleagues’ jobs. Nothing changes.
Intentional
C: as before
Thought: collaborate with them, make it a project, their involvement is part of the ‘share’ and gives them responsibility
feeling: not alone, unburdened, but still a bit nervous
action: put a date in to discuss first steps
result: start the ball rolling
My question is what can I do to support myself through this project?

Answer:

Something I’d like to point out is that in your intentional model, you list actions, for the most part, and the one thought is an assumption about someone else’s model “If I involve them, they’ll feel responsible for it.” This goal is about you and simplifying your job, not about your coworkers (though, yes, they are involved). They might be totally happy to leave whatever it is you’re doing in your court. So, what can you think for and about yourself that would help you get the ball rolling?
If you haven’t watched the Autumn Workshop yet on making decisions, I can’t recommend it enough for helping you in this phase. Come back to us when you’re ready for more coaching with a submission titled, “Only My Job pt 2”
