Aaaa interesting. So I was putting off the things I want to do by thinking I need to fix myself first. Ok so one of the things I’ve been putting off is wanting to write a draft of the novel I’ve been planning. I actually have the first 7000 words and I’ve worked out a basic structure. But I still feel like I’m not good enough at novel writing for example I struggle with description, grammar to actually do it.
So rocks.
1) I guess most important one would be to write. Is that enough of a rock or do I need to quantify this eg. for x time a day?
I’m struggling to think of what my other rocks would be as that really feels like all I need to do.
Should one of my rocks be something to do with believing in myself or doing thought work around this or do you think this will just happen organically as a bi product of doing the work?
Something about taking messy imperfect action/not striving for perfection just getting words down?
Should I try and work on my description somehow/See if I can do a course in it as this is the thing I obsess about being crap at?
Answer:
You’ve got it. You don’t have to fix yourself to set goals and pursue them (and on that note, maybe you’re not even broken…you’re human).
Let’s look at your rocks for writing a novel. What you have suggested above are all wonderful ideas! What’s stopping you from deciding what to choose as your rocks or to lean into these? What’s the worst that could happen if you decided the ideas you’ve drummed up are worth trying?
Finally, get curious about other ways to develop your descriptive writing. A course is one way – and it’s great if that’s what you’re called to! What are some other ways to practice descriptive writing?
