Ask a coach
Every few years I feel a pull to shift jobs or try something new with my career. This is despite the fact that I generally thrive on some level of order and routine and consistency. When doing some thought work I notice some of this desire starts around frustration and anger with the systems I work in. Sometimes it’s out of boredom because I analyze things, can see the big picture but others are often not ready to make a change. I love people and learning about them but sometimes feel I would be better off locked away in a remote cabin somewhere. I am feeling this itch again. What are some questions I can start with to dig deeper and determine if a change is really needed or not.
Answer:
Thank you for this question. A good place to start is to ask yourself why you want to change your circumstance. Is it because you think it will make you feel better or something else. List all the reasons. Then decide which reasons you like and resonate with, and which you don’t.
As an adult, you really can do anything you want, simply because you want to. You don’t have to dig deeper. You have permission to say “living in a cabin in the woods sounds fun.” and do it. What beliefs do you have that tell you that’s not ok? What beliefs do you have that tell you you’d be better off locked away? What would you get to avoid if you did that?
What emotion are you feeling now that you don’t like feeling?
